In memory of Shawu
November 2016-June 2018
During a couple of visits to Camp Jabulani, Kapama, Liza met their amazing herd of rescued elephants and fell in love with Shawu, a wee baby elephant who was being raised and cared for at HESC, the heart of Lente Roode's family reserve, Kapama. Sadly, just shortly after he joined and was nurtured by the rest of the elephant herd, Shawu died from a heart condition. Since that time, Lente’s daughter Adine Roode has established HERD as the 1st Elephant Orphanage in South Africa. They look forward to welcoming and caring for South African orphaned baby elephants as well as continuing the care of the existing Jabulani herd. Liza was greatly inspired by her time with Shawu to create a body of artwork to help raise funds for all the elephants of HERD.
